” Love Yourself above all the love that others have for you.”
– From Spirit
Nathaniel Wilson is a dreamer. A world traveler, entrepreneur, and Gen Z storyteller who utilizes the mediums of playwriting, performance, and fashion to share stories that facilitate the expansion of the collective consciousness around ideas and experiences of beauty.
“At the end of 2020, a friend suggested that I make short films based on my dreams. While I thought this was a great idea because I had never thought of this before, my heart was not into making films; it had always been with live theatre. So, I “shelved” the idea until, in 2023, I got the idea to write a stageplay based on my dreams that utilizes immersive 3D holographic projections entitled “It’s No Ordinary Thing.” It’s No Ordinary Thing is my proclamation to the world that we should all continue to dare to dream. It is a loving reminder that dreams gave birth to us long before we were born. It is a thank you to everyone who has supported my dreams, and it brings me so much joy to share my dreams with you.”
Nathaniel Wilson masterfully curated and wrote “It’s No Ordinary Thing.”
Nathaniel’s story began in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, where he, as a teenager, participated in various theater groups and classes. His most impactful theater experiences were both at Centerstage, where he attended Camp Centerstage and the Encounter youth program. In both of these programs, he was introduced to theater as a primary tool for community building, storytelling as a healing tool, and the power of non-narrative experimental theater because these works center people, not profit.
Nathaniel graduated from Prescott College in May 2024 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Arts & Letters. Through his education at Prescott College, he had the pleasure of independently studying with Southeast Asian theatremaker Ruth Pongstaphone, where he was introduced to autoethnography, Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, and Burmese perspectives, and approaches to the theater, which is far older than Western theater. Through this study, Nathaniel has come to understand his unique approach to theater inherent in his being.
Nathaniel has traveled to Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, and throughout the United States. He was most impacted by his time living in Brazil and Egypt. In Brazil, Nathaniel wrote “It’s No Ordinary Thing” as he was deeply inspired by Afro-Brazillian culture and how it artistically permeates every aspect of Brazilian society. Furthermore, in Egypt, he learned that the glory of a place is not in the ancient monuments but rather in the hearts of the people. Egypt taught him about the prosperity of kindness, the power of giving and being lighthearted. Nathaniel strives to recreate the themes and experiences he learned in both Brazil and Egypt. “Brazil and Egypt have had the greatest impact on me. No words can truly describe how much I love both of these countries. But there’s one thing for sure: both countries have some of the most beautiful men that I’ve ever seen!”
Nathaniel believes that the power of being an effective artist comes from always being fully immersed in life and with the everyday people that the artist serves. Thus, he does not wish to make a living solely off of his art because he realizes that as artists, we often have to work in “mundane” situations and often work twice as hard because if we don’t, we won’t be able to make art, it will have been debased to being just mere entertainment.
“I believe that to be an artist is to commune with the people.”
